Gillian Anderson, perhaps best known for her role as Agent Scully in the TV series “The X Files”, has opened up about her struggles with depression.  In a recent interview, she discusses how her symptoms impacted her to the point that at times, she felt unable to leave her home.  She also shares that she has battled depression for much of her life, telling us that she started therapy at age 14.  While some might think this is young, statistics and research tell us that most lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14 and three-quarters begin by age 24.  With nearly 1 in 5 young people experiencing symptoms of mental health challenges, it’s important to remind them (and ourselves!) that people struggling are not alone.  And perhaps, more importantly, we all need reminders that when it comes to mental health challenges, nobody asks for it and it is not a character flaw.
